2023 is here, which means that Veganuary is finally upon us. For those of you unaware, Veganuary is a popular challenge to eat a completely vegan diet throughout the month of January, similar to other new year challenges such as ‘Dry January’. If you have taken on the challenge this year, or just fancy a clean bite to eat, here’s a comprehensive guide to the local businesses and restaurants getting involved and offering tasty vegan meals in York…
Double Dutch Pancake House
All year round, Double Dutch Pancake House provides an abundant vegan menu including both sweet and savoury pancakes, milkshakes and delicious ice cream. Why not try their ‘Amsterdammer’ pancakes with vegan bacon, maple syrup and sliced apple for £9.75, or ‘Go Nuts’ with vegan nutella and toasted almonds for £9.15. Pay a visit between 2pm and 4pm Monday to Friday to catch their vegan special – build your own pancake with a drink for £7.
Rise
If pancakes aren’t your thing, hit up popular brunch spot Rise on Fossgate for some healthier options. On the vegan menu here you will find a flamingo bowl with strawberries, raspberries, banana, soya yoghurt and granola for £6.50. An affordable and nutritious start to your day! For some extra vitamins, try a 100% fresh fruit smoothie, herbal tea, or coffee with the full range of dairy free milk options. Rise has also spiced up the vegan menu staple, avocado on toast, by adding chilli, radish edamame, spiced seeds and mushrooms.
Source
Source is an innovative restaurant in Coppergate shopping centre, serving up vegan dishes all day long. The menu at source will make Veganuary seem like a treat, full of vegan alternatives to classic meat dishes for example the ‘No lobster salad’ (£8.50), a sourdough sandwich with marinated palm hearts to mimic the taste and texture of lobster. You can even add hand cut fries for £3. Also available is VeganFriedChicken (VFC), vegetable gyoza and vish and chips. Source does have an alcohol licence so you can grab a glass of prosecco or beer to accompany your meal.
Ippuku Tea House
Vegan food is integral to many cultures around the world and Ippuku Tea House is bringing the taste of Japan to York. A star on the menu is the Japanese style vegetable curry made completely from scratch, a rich and thick vegetable curry served with sticky steamed rice. Tofu has been a staple of Japanese cuisine since the Nara period, praised for its incredible nutritional value especially as a meat substitute. Ippuku has definitely encompassed this within their menu offering ginger tofu, teriyaki tofu and mapo tofu.
Dough Eyed Pizza
If you’re craving a Friday night pizza after work throughout January, Dough Eyed has got you covered! The pizzeria and bar is located off the Shambles Market and has an array of vegan pizzas. Try the speciality pizza ‘Diana’(£14). The base is a light pea and mint cream topped with pea shoots, grilled artichokes and Italian yellow tomatoes. For a simpler option try the ‘Marinara’ (£9) which has similar flavours to a traditional pizza, minus the cheese of course.
Doner Summer
Every single thing on the Doner Summer menu is vegan meaning there are lots of flavourful dishes to choose from. Doner Summer aims to mimic traditional takeaway food, and as veganism isn’t always about health, vegans need a treat too. As the name alludes, there are vegan alternatives to the takeaway favourite doner kebab. The ‘Bad Girl Kebab’ features doner and garlic chilli chick’n, pink cabbage, tomato pickles, pink garlic aioli and more. Options to add fries, tots, gravy or loaded animal fries are also available.
El Rayo Cantina
This amazing vegan, Mexican style, burrito bar is a pop-up inside the very popular Spark in York. Spark is an outdoor venue, made up of shipping containers, that is host to many great, local startups. On the menu here you will find an array of friendly burgers, burritos and authentic Mexican sides. Why not treat yourself to the ‘Taco Al Pastor’ which is a corn tortilla served with charred pastor salsa verde, onion, coriander and pineapple for £4.
YUZU Street Food
Yuzu is bringing asian style street food to York – and the best part is there’s options for vegans. This restaurant was started after being inspired by the street food during the owners travels throughout Asia. Yuzu serves some familiar dishes such as the Vegan chick’n Katsu Curry and Teriyaki Donburi with tofu and vegetables. They also have delicious vegetable gyozas and an array of vegan-friendly bao buns with either Vegan Korean fried chicken, Japanese fried tofu or miso aubergine.
Good luck to everyone attempting Veganuary this month! It’s a great way to reduce meat consumption, help the environment and stay healthy into the new year. With great options to choose from, this year should be a breeze.
