As Bosun’s passes its first birthday, York has every reason to join in the celebrations. This centrepiece of an already idyllic location has been a positive addition to the city; a unique restaurant with a warm welcome at a special setting. Now, 12 months on from opening its inviting doors at the end of 2021, having established their quality throughout 2022, Bosun’s are cooking on to an even tastier 2023.

Set up by 2 Bishopthorpe families and led by Kerrie Cook, the objective to create an experience deserving of the surroundings has been quickly realised. Taking on the distinctive Boatyard building in Bishopthorpe was a project that required skill and passion. This place had every reason to succeed, but had rarely achieved its potential before now. Located directly next to the River Ouse and raised on a stilted platform to avoid flooding, Bosun’s elevation offers unrivalled views of a postcard picture of York; all it needed was something equally exceptional to enjoy them with.

And now it’s here. The food, service and decor create an atmosphere that makes the Boatyard building the dining destination it was destined to be. The interior is at once sweeping and elegant, cosy and intimate. Impressing with an abundance of greenery that brings the outside in, whilst shimmering with lighting fit for every occasion, this is thoughtful design with a personal touch. Which is all before we experience the standout exterior; an area that would be difficult to disappoint, such is the expanse of its outlook, and indeed Bosun’s make the terrace a spectacular spot to sit in and gaze out.

Aesthetics approved, but what about the food? Well, it would be easy to think that the people of York would flock for the lovely location regardless of the restaurant. Maybe, but fortunately we don’t get to find out whether Bosun’s would succeed serving substandard stuff, because the food fulfills. Menus move with the seasons, using great quality and locally sourced produce, provided by suppliers such as R&J Butchers, Hodgson’s Fish, Cryer & Stott Cheesemongers, Delifresh, Bluebird Bakery and Millers of York. These flavourful ingredients are turned into dishes that are both satisfyingly familiar and expertly innovative.

As such, the offering is inclusive; the main menu reads easily of Bosun’s burgers and sumptuous steaks, and look a little further to discover truffle oil on wild mushrooms, curried parsnip purees, smoked rub port tomahawks, beetroot gels and duck fat potato fondants. It’s honest grub elevated by master chefs. This cooking and setting are perfect for Sunday roasts, whilst children are treated to their own menu that doesn’t dumb down the deliciousness. Finish off with indulgent desserts that include crowd pleasing favourites from sticky toffee pudding to churros.

And to wash it down, there is a wide choice from an extensive drinks selection that keeps the ethos of quality and choice, local and international; draught beers, classic cocktails, wonderful wines and plenty of non-alcoholic options too, all allows something for everyone, whether celebrating with a bottle on the terrace or snuggling with a tipple indoors. Either way, we’re raising a glass to a year of Bosun’s, and are looking forward to a second year of super service, fabulous food and stunning surroundings, at a place fit for every York season.
