If you’ve been living or working in York for so long that city life has started to lose its lustre, you might need to take some time out to rediscover the place you call home. This spring, The Grand is offering York residents a chance to banish their winter blues on a luxury staycation that’s guaranteed to leave you falling back in love with this magnificent city.
The 5-star Grand resides in a handsome red brick building that was once a palace of business for one of Edwardian Britain’s wealthiest railways. This spa hotel is just a short walk from the York’s railway station and beautiful Museum Gardens, and from its tall windows guests can admire views over the old city walls, along which daffodils bloom each spring.
Rooms here usually start at £212 per night, but through March those who live in York or the surrounding area can stay in an elegant and comfortable Classic room for just £129 for the room only or £169 including a delicious ‘full Yorkshire’ breakfast. Each room boasts tasteful decor in one of two different styles: the first is more traditional, celebrating the building’s heritage and highlighting its period features, while the other offers a contemporary twist on the hotel’s past. Both come complete with Egyptian cotton bed linen and a bathrobe and slippers to be worn when visiting the hotel’s spa. This can be found downstairs in the atmospheric old vaults, where soothingly lit arched ceilings and thick stone walls help to create a sense of really getting away from it all. Guests of all ages can take a dip in the 14-metre swimming pool while grown-ups can relax in the aromatic steam room and Nordic dry sauna, or work out in the well equipped gym. The Grand’s team of skilled beauty therapists also offer a range of indulgent treatments, from anti-ageing facials to hot stone massage.
Those who would like to dine here during their stay can choose a dinner, bed and breakfast package which costs £239 as part of the offer. The Grand has two excellent eateries – The Rise, which serves an a la carte menu of flavourful modern dishes in a stylish ‘soft industrial’ space, and the three AA rosette-awarded fine dining restaurant Legacy with its eight-course tasting menu that showcases classic Yorkshire produce with a focus on locality, sustainability and seasonality.
For pre or post-dinner drinks, there’s the 1906 bar, where you can sip one of The Grand’s signature cocktails and listen to live music on a Friday or Saturday night. For those who want to return from their staycation with a brand new skill, the hotel also has its own state-of-the-art cookery school, which offers courses on an almost daily basis with options to suit everyone from novices to aspiring chefs. You can have some fun while learning how to make the perfect pasta or artisan bread, or master a new cuisine like Italian, Middle Eastern, Indian or French brasserie.
Unlike some luxury hotels, The Grand prides itself on being truly family-friendly. The hotel’s Family Package lets you start your stay with a child-friendly check-in. Little ones will then get their own welcome packs and will be able to watch complimentary movies. The spa even offers a Little Manicure, so under 16s can enjoy some pampering time too.
During March, The Grand will celebrate Restaurant Week with a range of exclusive dining deals, including a two-course dinner at The Rise or a Grand afternoon tea laden with decadent treats for just £30 per person.
