There’s no better way to celebrate the end of the week than with a hearty meal enjoyed in the company of friends or family. Whether you‘re looking for a traditional roast or want to try something a little different, like a Portuguese-inspired feast, here’s where to get Sunday lunch in York.

Tasca Frango, Colliergate
If you’re seeking a flavourful alternative to the usual roast dinner, Tasca Frango might just be the place for your next Sunday gathering. Recreating the warm atmosphere and convivial spirit of an authentic Portuguese tasca, Sunday lunch here is designed to be shared. It’s even served on a metal platter, so that everyone can easily dig in. There are three delicious options to choose from: Frango’s famous piri-piri chicken thighs with flame grilled chorizo, ‘surf and turf’ sirloin steak and king prawns, or a vegan chargrilled goan-spiced cauliflower steak with hispi cabbage. To complete your meal, you can also add tasty sides such as deliciously cheesy leeks, spicy rice or an extra helping of piri-piri gravy.

The Rose & Crown, Lawrence Street
Dating back to the late 1700s, the Rose & Crown is a traditional pub with roaring fires to cosy up next to and a great selection of local beers and whiskies to try. You can turn Sunday lunch into a three-course meal here, beginning with starters like creamy garlic mushrooms or salt and pepper crispy shredded chicken. You can then move on to the main event – a roast topside of beef or succulent roast chicken breast, served with duck fat roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, homemade Yorkshire pudding and ‘proper’ gravy. If this doesn’t take your fancy, there are other mains available, too, including fish and chips, a gammon steak or pies. To finish, you can then tuck into decadent sticky toffee pudding or a triple chocolate brownie.

To truly indulge, you can start your meal with fresh North Sea oysters, or salt-baked celeriac with truffle soup. You can then choose between a 45-day salt-aged beef sirloin, roast chicken, or a wild mushroom and butternut squash wellington, all of which are accompanied by a Yorkshire pudding, roasted parsnips, cauliflower cheese, glazed carrots and roast potatoes. Additional sides can be added to customise your meal and you can finish with desserts like a 70% Valrhona chocolate tart with raspberry and pistachio, or a classic bread and butter pudding.
