There’s nothing so quintessentially British as enjoying a portion of fish and chips, especially if they’re eaten out of the paper while sitting beside the sea. With National Fish and Chip day coming up on the 3rd June, we’ve put together this list featuring some of the best places to find them in North Yorkshire. Whether you’re looking to pick up a takeaway in York, or fancy travelling further afield to the beautiful Yorkshire coast, you’ll find some of the county’s most popular fish and chip restaurants mentioned here…
Drake’s Fish & Chips, York
Drake’s Fish & Chips opened on Low Petergate in 2010 and has quickly become a firm favourite among York’s resident foodies and tourists alike. The award-winning restaurant serves traceable North Sea fish from MSC certified suppliers, fried the Yorkshire way in British-reared beef dripping for a fantastic taste. Their chips are made with locally-grown potatoes and there are plenty of gluten-free options available for coeliacs. A review on Drake’s website says: ‘The best! – I used to be a prize winning fryer and have never tasted anything THIS GOOD since. If you are in York, eat here!’
Takeaway opening times: Monday-Thursday: 11am-8pm / Friday & Saturday: 11am-9pm / Sunday: 12pm-8pm
Fish Cottage, Sandsend
Situated in the pretty seaside village of Sandsend, Fish Cottage serves classic fish and chips to enjoy in their beautiful garden or on the nearby beach. For those looking to try something new, the restaurant and takeaway offers some more adventurous seafood dishes – you can sample fishy delights such as crab fries, battered oysters, prawn tacos or the ‘Codzilla’ burger. A reviewer on Tripadvisor says: ‘I can honestly say this is a hidden gem…there is a fabulous choice from traditional fish and chips, to crab, lobster and even oysters. This is a small place [and they make] the most of what they have with beautiful decor inside and large picnic bench style seating outside.’
Takeaway opening times: Open every day from 12pm-7pm
The Seafood Social, Scarborough
A fish and chip restaurant with a difference, The Seafood Social is part of a community initiative that aims to tackle the issue of homelessness by offering employment and skill-building opportunities to those in need. At their relaxed, modern cafe you’ll find a wide variety of tempting dishes to eat in or take away. Try Whitby Glorious Grains Scampi with its super seedy crumb or Bubble Bobble Prawns, a street food-style serving of juicy prawn pieces in a light and crisp bubble coating served on lettuce with chilli jam. The prices here are low but as all of the restaurant’s profits are donated to a local charity, customers are encouraged to ‘pay it forward’ by adding a little extra to their bill if they can.
Takeaway opening times: Monday & Saturday: 10am-5pm / Tuesday & Thursday: 10am-8pm Wednesday: 10am-7pm / Friday: 10am-5:30pm
The Magpie Café, Whitby
Located on Whitby’s historic quay, The Magpie Café is a true Yorkshire landmark. This family-run restaurant’s popularity is evident from its long queues – if you’ve ever visited the town in peak tourist season, you’ll likely have noticed them stretching all the way down the harbour front. The Magpie has now won the Good Food Award Gold Seal for the third year running and is a real celebrity favourite. In a review for the Guardian, Jay Rayner says: ‘you would have to be a certified curmudgeon to not like the Magpie,’ going on to explain that the restaurant has got the temperature of their frying fat just right so that the outside of his haddock ‘shattered under the pressure of a fork, the pearly fish inside falling away to flakes.’
Takeaway opening times: Open every day from 11:30am-9pm
Inghams, Filey
Known for its unspoilt beaches and grand Victorian crescent, Filey is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity. There’s much to do here – from paddling in the sea or exploring the wilds of Filey Brigg, to trying your luck on the slot machines in the amusement arcade. If you’re looking for fish and chips, Inghams is the place to go. This traditional restaurant and takeaway has been open for over thirty years and their fish and chips have been described as ‘the best on the North Yorkshire coast.’ One Tripadvisor reviewer says: ‘[the] service was friendly and prompt and the fish and chips were superb – lovely, tender, haddock in a crispy batter, with wonderful chips.’
Takeaway opening times: Monday-Thursday: 11:45am-2pm/4:15pm-6:30pm / Friday: 11:45am-2pm/4:15pm-7pm / Saturday & Sunday: 11:45am-7pm
Millers Fish & Chips, Haxby
Situated in Haxby, just five miles from York city centre, Millers was recognised as the UK’s no.1 fish and chip shop at the National Fish & Chip Awards in 2018. Here you’ll find delicious, sustainably-caught fish served with the usual accompaniments of chips and mushy peas, or their own homemade curry sauce and wonderfully rich gravy. Gluten-free options are available and the halloumi fries make a great vegetarian alternative and come in a generously-sized portion. Nothing goes to waste here – you can even pick up a bag of batter ‘scraps’ for a pound. One online review says: ‘I opted to sit in the restaurant and left feeling smug! Haddock, chips, and mushy peas of the highest quality served in clean surroundings by a charming staff member. An hour well spent, thoroughly recommended.’

Potter Hill Fisheries, Pickering
Serving fish and chips for takeaway only, Potter Hill Fisheries is the place to go if you want to grab a spot of lunch while exploring the charming North Yorkshire market town of Pickering. Their menu features everything you’d expect from a local chippy, including battered cod and haddock, chip butties, fish cakes and scampi, as well as a few unexpected extras such as black pudding and smoked sausage. The staff here are welcoming and helpful and the service is quick. A reviewer on Tripadvisor says: ‘The fish was fresh and sweet tasting with crispy batter and the chips well fried and tasty.
