The fertile land of North Yorkshire is home to a wonderful array of artisanal distilleries who serve their ethos for their craft in a glass. With more people trying to shop amongst local vendors it’s important to be aware of all the fantastic businesses just a short way away. For that reason here’s a guide to some Must-Visit Breweries and Distilleries around Yorkshire.

Brass Castle is an independent Malton-based brewery renowned for their vegan and gluten-free craft. They take a stripped back approach focussing on sourcing the finest grains and hops and treating them with care which is key for making their ‘good honest beer’. Alongside their mainstay Pilsner and IPAs they always have a great rotation of exciting but sophisticated alternatives which sport some awesome artwork to match. They have a taproom in the middle of their home of Malton, make sure to check it out.

 

Helmsley Brewing Co. are a micro brewery with a shop and bar in the North Yorkshire Moors. Their handcrafted beer is popular with locals and visitors and so are their tours and events. They are meticulous about sourcing the finest ingredients which has been their labour of love since 2012. They are situated in Helmsley which is the only market town in the North York Moors National Park, making it a wonderful place to visit.

 

York Gin is a small independent distillery making some of the world’s finest gins locally in York. Since its launch in 2018, they have created a range of gins that have won multiple gold medals at the world’s top spirits competitions helping them to forge a reputation synonymous with the finest quality.  The distillery prioritises sustainability and responsibility in their business practices, running on 100% green energy. Find their gins and gifts in a beautiful 16th century shop – winner of the Visit York Tourism Awards Shop of the Year title in 2022.

 

Cooper King distillery operates with simple principles. They offer Sustainable spirits distilled with craftsmanship, honesty and adventure, from a self-built distillery powered by 100% renewable energy. Their carbon-negative Gin is the first of its kind in the country and is stocked in some of the country’s most celebrated shops. Their brewery is open on weekends for tailored experiences and if you’re a fan of what they do you can become a member of their club for special treatment.

 

Back in Malton you can also find Rare Bird distillery whose gin is made on-site at their premises which also hosts a bar and shop. They offer a superior tasting gin to your average with an exquisite flavour. Their Gin school on  Wednesdays and weekends  is extremely popular and sees they share the secrets of their delicious range.

 

Paul Theakston chose to leave Theakstons, a 5 generation family business, following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. Black Sheep brewery is popular on the taps of many local pubs across the north. Their range of beers is an eclectic mix of classic and modern styles as they mix innovation and tradition in their flavours and their methods. They have pubs in York and Leeds in excellent locations and are certainly not to be missed if you see them on the shelves of a local store.

 

Spirit of Yorkshire distillery presents the essence of God’s country in a single malt whiskey using 100% homegrown barley. They opened the first ever single malt whisky distillery in the village Hunmanby, near Filey Bay on the Yorkshire Coast. They offer tours and tasting and host guests in the ‘Pot Still Coffee Shop’ which serves excellent afternoon tea. Certainly something to experience if you’re in the area.

 

Over in Driffield Wold Top Brewery make great tasting beer, using home grown, and sustainably sourced ingredients for the rest of Yorkshire to enjoy. It was founded in 2003 by farmers Tom and Gill, who were looking at different ways to sustain the family farm with diversification and hit on brewing as their solution. Nowadays their operation allows them to offer a range of excellent beers, some of which are gluten free. They run tours of their charming brewery which you can book over on their website.
