The spooky season is upon us and what better way to celebrate the scariest time of year than with some Halloween fun. York’s gruesome ghostly history makes this time of year even creepier and even more exciting. If you enjoy getting your socks scared off, or prefer some more wholesome family fun, you will be able to find a way to enjoy the holiday in your own way in York. Here are some fun, and scary, events we have found that you can take part in to make this Halloween extra spook-tastic…
Ghost Trails
Journey through the mysterious and ghostly history of York with one of the many ghost tours that will open your mind and send shivers down your spine. Face your fears with The Original Ghost Walk, which is believed to be the first exclusive ghost walk. They provide an authentic, disturbing experience every night at 8:00pm or at 6:30pm from the 28th until the 31st, for only £7.50 for adults and £5 for children and students.
You can also explore the dark shadows of York’s spooky history with the Shadows of York tour where you can discover how cruel life can be for £10 per adult and only £6 for ghouls aged under 16. This walk takes place every night at 6:30pm with additional sessions added for the Halloween season. Unlike the Original Ghost Walk, you must prebook to guarantee your spot on the Shadows of York tour.
The York Dungeon
Scare yourself silly with a walkthrough of the ten amazing theatrical shows at the York Dungeon. Meet famous faces from the past 2000 years of York’s dark past and attempt to survive the terrifying witch in the York Castle Dungeon. Enjoy a night of child free fun by attending one of the 18 plus Dungeon Lates events for £25 per person that take place during the darker hours of the night. If you’re feeling brave enough, join the sinister Victorian medium Madame Card zand open your eyes to the world of the unliving at the brand new Halloween show ‘Séance’, which is available to experience until 6th November.
York Castle Museum Haunted Halloween Tour
Get ready to travel back in time to experience some gruesome, bone-chilling and paranormal stories from the York Prison Gaoler at York Castle Museum. Once the lights go out and the tour begins you’ll be exposed to the horrifying tales of life at the prison and recent ghostly encounters staff have experienced. This tour is adults only as content is inappropriate for a younger audience inlcuding themes of sexual assualt, tortoure and death is featured throughout the tour. Hurry and book your tickets now for 31st October at 5:30pm before this night of terror sells out as spaces are going fast.
Dorian Deathly: A Night of Face Melting Horror at Theatre@41 – Oct 26th-31st
For an evening of paranormal sciences, ghost stories, theatrical trickery, spookology and an occasional unexpected guest, head on over to Theatre@41 for A Night of Face Melting Horror. The night will be led by Dorian Dealthy, a local spookologist and ghost botherer who will explore tales of hauntings, horrors captured on film and the complete history of ghosts with everyone huddled around the stage. Running from 26th October until 31st October at 8:30pm every night, this spooky evening’s tickets range between £12 and £50.
Stargazing at North York Moors
Venture onto the North York Moors to experience an unforgettable stargazing experience this Halloween season. Gaze upon the never-ending skies and let your mind wander to the possibilities that the universes beyond our own may hold. Cosy up with one of The Grand York’s packages with rooms starting from £395 per room based on two adults or from £305 per room for single occupancy. This is the perfect romantic getaway to enjoy this spooky season for the perfect mix of romance and curiosity about aliens and other worlds. Key dates during this season include 11th October where Saturn’s rings and Jupiter can be seen and 16th November for a chance to witness shooting stars and the Milky Way arching overhead.
York’s Chocolate Story Trick or Treat Trek
Only the bravest children would be able to handle terrifying the York’s Chocolate Story Trick or Treat Trek. Explore the streets of York with a spooky host who will reveal the grizzly tales from the historic city’s past. Indulge in the tasty Halloween sweets and chocolates available at the trek and be prepared to dress up as scary as you can as the best dressed little monster may earn an extra treat. The Trick or Treat Trek takes place from 27th until 30th October at 12:15pm and 2:15pm. Children’s ticket cost £12.50 and adults cost £8 – all under 16’s must be accompanied by a fully paying adult.
Pumpkin Carving at Bedern Hall
Perfect your pumpkin carving skills with the help of the spooky, medieval Bedern Hall this halloween season. Carve out some fun with all your family on October 25th from 3:00pm until 5:00pm and enjoy some fresh local apple juice (or tasty mulled cider for the parents). Tickets cost £15 for the initial adult but after that it is only £8 for children and additional adults. Don’t miss out on the chance to make unforgettable memories and scary masterpieces!
Hallowscream at York Maze
Visit Yorkshire’s terrifyingly famous immersive fright night this Halloween …if you dare. Hallowscream at York Maze provides live-action scares with around 100 actors, five haunted house attractions, roving characters and live stage shows that will frighten you to your core. This night-time event is adult only with scares that will make even the toughest adults scream and shriek. Standard tickets cost £26 with events running from 13th October until 5th November, and if you look under 21 years of age be prepared to provide ID to prove your age.
